Maurice Bernard Sendak (/ ˈsɛndæk /; June 10, 1928 – May 8, 2012) was an American author and illustrator of children's books. His book Where the Wild Things Are was first published in 1963. [2] . Born to Polish-Jewish parents, his childhood was impacted by the death of many of his family members during the Holocaust.

Maurice Sendak (born June 10, 1928, Brooklyn, New York, U.S.—died May 8, 2012, Danbury, Connecticut) was an American artist and writer best known for his illustrated children’s books. Sendak was the son of Polish immigrants and received his formal art training at the Art Students League of New York.
