There are two men who have won the PGA Championship five times. Walter Hagen won the event prior to it switching to a stroke play format. Jack Nicklaus won five times during the stroke play era. There are 14 past champions in the 2025 PGA Championship field.

The PGA Championship was first played in 1916 and was a match-play event for the first 42 years of its existence. It's been played every year except when it paused for 1917, 1918 and 1919 for World World I and 1943 due to World War II. In 1958 it changed to stroke play with Dow Finsterwald the first winner after the format changed.

Masters champion Rory McIlroy and world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler will be playing together in the opening two rounds of the PGA Championship, joined by defending champion Xander Schauffele in another group of the top three players in the world.
