Hawaii’s Supreme Court will consider questions about issues that threaten to thwart a $4 billion settlement in last year’s devastating Maui wildfires.

The Hawaii Supreme Court on Wednesday agreed to answer key questions that will determine the fate of a proposed, $4 billion settlement of hundreds of lawsuits related to 2023’s Maui wildfires.

A Maui judge last month agreed to ask the state high court questions about how insurance companies can go about recouping money paid to policyholders.

The $4 billion proposed settlement related to the Maui wildfires is now headed to the Hawaii Supreme Court. Now, the Supreme Court will weigh in on how much money more than 100 insurance companies should be entitled to.
