A coronal mass ejection could strike the Earth's magnetosphere this week and cause a geomagnetic storm due to conditions caused by the autumnal equinox.

Meteorologists predict that Earth could be blasted by a geomagnetic storm on Wednesday due to its timing with the autumnal equinox. A coronal mass ejection (CME) — when plasma and magnetic particles burst forth from the sun’s surface — occurred on Sunday, the same day as the official start of fall, Space.com reported.

Charged particles crashing into Earth are expected to create strong solar storm conditions early Monday morning, prompting a Geomagnetic Storm Watch as the Northern Lights could be visible farther south than usual.

There is a chance to see the northern lights in Washington on Monday night, although weather could be a limiting factor. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is forecasting geomagnetic storms measuring at G1 to G2 - on a scale of one to five.

If it hits as night falls in the U.S. on Monday, aurora could be visible as far south as Iowa and Pennsylvania. If it arrives earlier, northern Europe could see the display.
