NEWCASTLE have been praised for donating £15,000 towards helping AFC Wimbledon deal with their flooded pitch. The Wombles had been due to host Eddie Howe’s side in the Carabao Cup this week.

Graham Stacey, 50, from Hook in Hampshire, set up the fundraiser – which has surpassed its target of £50,000 – after the Cherry Red Records Stadium was hit with flooding and appeared to have a sinkhole in the pitch after some areas of the country saw more than a month’s worth of rain in 24 hours on Monday.

Former AFC Wimbledon players Jack Currie and Lee Brown have both made donations towards the JustGiving page to help the club get games back on at Plough Lane following the extensive flooding and damage to the pitch and stadium. Currie, 22, progressed through the club’s academy and made 95 first team appearances before joining Oxford in the summer.

Tuesday night’s Carabao Cup third-round tie between AFC Wimbledon and Newcastle has been postponed due to extensive flooding that caused what looked like a sinkhole to open up on the pitch at the Cherry Red Records Stadium.
