Ford Motor Company has agreed to pay $165 million, the second-largest auto penalty ever issued by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, to settle charges it failed to comply with federal recall requirements.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration hit Ford with the second-largest civil penalty in its history, saying the automaker failed to recall vehicles in a timely manner.

Ford Motor Co. will pay a penalty of up to $165 million to the U.S. government for moving too slowly on a recall and failing to give accurate recall information.
