It’s tough to trust anything that comes out of Samantha “Elvis” Redford’s (Julianne Nicholson) mouth at this point in the series, but episode 7 reveals a new sincerity to her actions. The Paradise founder doesn’t lie so much as she just sort of hides the truth.

The more is more approach is par for the course for Paradise, a series whose first episode opens with the murder of U.S. President Cal Bradford (James Marsden) and ends with the bonkers reveal that the show is set in an underground city built to withstand the apocalypse.

It’s all good fun, at least until the seventh episode, “The Day,” which is the most upsetting episode of TV you’ll watch this year. Is that a bold pronouncement for two months into 2025? Surely. But while the first six episodes are a good time at the ol’ boob tube,
