The Social Democrats (SPD) came in first with 30.9% in the Brandenburg state elections, just ahead of the far-right AfD's 29.2%. The election was a comeback for Chancellor Olaf Scholz's party, which polls predicted for weeks to come second with 20%.

The centre-left Social Democrats (SPD) appear headed for a narrow election victory over the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) in the eastern German state of Brandenburg, according to initial projected results.

Exit polls in Brandenburg, where a battle between the Social Democrats and the far-right Alternative for Germany was expected to take place, show a lead for the SPD. In particular, the results from the exit polls outside the polling stations in the German state give the SPD 31 percent and the AfD 30 percent.

However, questions about the future of Germany's ruling coalition remain.It was "only" a regional election and Brandenburg, with its 2.1 million eligible voters, is only one of Germany's 16 federal states.
