Over 80 people were killed and scores more injured in recent sectarian clashes in northwestern Pakistan. Experts say historic rivalries, extremist Islamist groups, and political marginalization are to blame.

Clashes continue in Pakistan's Kurram district between Sunni and Shia tribes, resulting in at least 10 deaths and 21 injuries despite a ceasefire. Additional mediation efforts are planned, but conflicts persist amid a medicine shortage due to road closures following an earlier attack on a passenger convoy.

The death toll in Pakistan's Kurram district rose to 90 on Thursday (28 November) as fresh skirmishes claimed 12 more lives and left 18 injured. Gunfire erupted in both upper and lower regions of the district, according to local officials. The ongoing violence has persisted despite a ceasefire, with clashes continuing for over a week.

Efforts to implement a ceasefire were met with resistance. Kurram Deputy Commissioner Javedullah Mehsood, local elders, and police raised white flags on their vehicles in a bid to deploy officers to trenches held by the warring factions,

The violence erupted on Thursday when a convoy of passenger coaches carrying Shiite Muslims was ambushed in the Parachinar area, leading to a heavy casualty.
