A 2-year-old manatee stranded in a small Florida pond far from open water was rescued last week after the storm surge from Hurricane Helene carried it more than a mile inland.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) said earlier in the week, it was notified of a small manatee alone in the shallow parts of the Caloosahatchee River. The river extends from the northern edge of the Everglades and drains into the Gulf of Mexico near Fort Myers.
