We've got some accumulating snow to kick things off. That will be followed by the coldest airmass of the winter season thus far. Finally, in the longer range, it appears that an active/stormy pattern is going to unfold over the next few weeks across the eastern United States.

Forecasters say they expect accumulating, plowable snow to begin falling in Massachusetts on Sunday afternoon.

A NWS forecaster said Massachusetts will see at most two inches of snowfall from the storm this weekend. Most parts of the state, including Worcester, Boston and the South Shore, are expected to get less than an inch of snow.

Mensch said if the storm hits Massachusetts, it could bring some snow showers throughout the day on Saturday. If the winter storm hits Massachusetts this weekend, it could bring up to three inches of snow, according to Caitlyn Mensch, a NWS meteorologist.

NWS meteorologists wrote in Friday morning's forecast that there is "increasing confidence in an accumulating/plowable snow event later (Sunday) and especially (Sunday) night across the region." There is still some uncertainty about total snowfall amounts because the system is more than 48 hours out,
