An FBI agent who interviewed two former Memphis police officers who are on trial in the fatal beating of Tyre Nichols' has testified that they accepted accountability for participating.

Former Memphis officer testified under a plea deal that he told his supervisor the arrest of Tyre Nichols was handled “by the book."

One of the former Memphis Police Scorpion Unit officers accused in the beating of Tyre Nichols testified on Tuesday in the federal trial charging three of the five officers with civil rights violations.

A former Memphis police officer testified Thursday at the federal trial of three ex-officers facing charges related to the January 2023 beating death of Tyre Nichols that he believes he panicked during the encounter.

Three of the five cops criminally and federally charged in Nichols’ fatal beating have been on trial this month on criminal charges. Former Memphis police officers Tadarrius Bean, Demetrius Haley and Justin Smith entered a not guilty plea, while the remaining two ex-cops, Mills and Emmitt Martin, pleaded guilty.

Desmond Mills Jr., who testified against his former colleagues, broke down in court, saying, “I made his child fatherless.”
